William (Bill) Garvey has been the editorial chief at Business & Commercial Aviation since 2000. Prior to that he served as Managing Editor of Aviation Week Television, where he wrote and appeared in more than 100 video news segments. Previously, he was the top editor for both Flying and Professional Pilot magazines, as well as a member of the senior editorial staff at Reader's Digest. At one point, he also managed communications for FlightSafety International. He began his career in 1968 as a daily newspaper reporter on Long Island, New York, and then joined the Associated Press as a writer and editor in its Miami bureau before beginning his aviation journalism career on the staff of AOPA Pilot in 1972.
Bill has authored or co-authored three aviation books, was a network essayist for National Public Radio, wrote aviation documentaries for The Discovery Channel, and has written on aviation matters for numerous publications including The New York Times, Smithsonian Air & Space, Popular Mechanics, Hemispheres and The Associated Press, among others. During his stewardship at Business & Commercial Aviation, the magazine, its staff editors and contributors have received scores of awards for editorial excellence.
The recipient of Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Awards from both the National Business Aviation Association and the Aerospace Media Awards organization, Bill also received the Aviation Journalism Award from the National Air Transportation Association and an Aerospace Journalist of the Year Award for Business Aviation. In 2018, he was named a Distinguished Statesman of Aviation by the National Aeronautic Association.
As for piloting, Bill holds a Commercial license, along with multiengine, instrument, seaplane and glider ratings. He has owned several aircraft over the years and admits that as deadlines near, often wishes he was “up there, rather than down here.” But then again, he also admits there have been memorable occasions when he wished the reverse.
Long and happily married to Tamara Eberlein, a writer with a solo flight in her student pilot logbook, Bill is the proud father of four amazing children, two of whom became military aviators.
