Neil Armstrong and Bob Hoover have been friends for a long time. Mr. Armstrong had promised Bob that he would attend the 10th Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards and be honored with the Bob Hoover Freedom of Flight Award. Because Bob wanted to celebrate his good friend’s life with this award, his wife Carol, will accept on his behalf. Neil Armstrong successfully landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. He felt he had a 90% chance of returning safely to Earth but only an even-money chance to successfully land on the moon. Neil’s famous line, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” had us all glued to the television watching the first landing on the moon, Thrillingly, Neil Armstrong and later, Buzz Aldrin, both got the opportunity to set foot on the moon from the Apollo 11 Lunar module. To those who remember, it seemed anything was possible. The world found a hero that day, inspiring many to enter aviation and choose careers in space flight. He flew west on August 25th 2012.
